Welcome To Legal Aid Scheme, Ghana.

Ghana Legal Aid Scheme is a public service organisation within the Justice delivery system of Ghana. It is one of the component institutions over which the Ministry for Justice has oversight responsibility and is governed by a twelve (12) member Board of Directors, The Scheme operates countrywide from ten (10) offices in all the Regional capitals. Ghana Legal Aid recruits Legal Aid Officers (ADR) and Lawyers in Ghana.


The Scheme is tasked under the Legal Aid Scheme Act 1997 (Act 542) to provide legal assistance to the poor and indigent, as well as other persons in the prosecution and defence of their rights under the Constitution of Ghana

The Legal Aid Scheme is Ghana's effort at ensuring that constitutional democracy, rule of law and access to justice extends to the poor and vulnerable who would otherwise be excluded from the formal justice delivery system. It provides legal assistance for all who seek to defend or enforce the Constitution in accordance with Article 294 of the Constitution.

The Scheme also ensures legal representation for persons facing criminal proceedings which could result in a death penalty or life imprisonment such as murder, treason and manslaughter.Where other criminal matters are concerned the Scheme provides representation for persons who are faced with proceedings but cannot aford the services of a lawyer. On juvinile justice issues all children acing criminal proceedings are entitled to legal aid undeer the Juvinile Justice Act.


Legal aid is also available for persons who have legal issues in civil matters but are unable to afford the services of a trained legal person in efforts to have the issue resolved. The Scheme assists with succession or estate issues especially when they are intestate, landlord and tenant matters; labour issues between employers and employees; family related issues such as marriage, paternity, custody, maintenance, etc and issues of compensation resulting from injuries or damage to persons or property including insurance.
